Fuel Cell Efficiency Producing Pure CO2

How the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell System Works
EMISSIONS FREE

Closed Loop CO2 System

  1. Waste heat reforms (m)ethanol to syngas.

  2. Syngas (H2+CO) fuels the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC), creating electricity to charge the battery, and heat for step 1.

  3. SOFC filters O2 from the atmosphere, creating CO2+H2O. Important: CO2 is not diluted with N2.

  4. Water condenses, leaving pure CO2 gas.

  5. Waste heat also drives the absorption refrigeration cycle, liquifying CO2.

  6. Liquid CO2 is stored on empty side of fuel tank.

Upstream CO2 Sequestration Method:

1 | While a vehicle refuels, CO2 is dispensed to the gas station’s tank.

2 | When refueling a gas station, the (m)ethanol truck collects accumulated CO2 from the station’s tank.

3 | When the (m)ethanol truck refuels, the CO2 collection is dispensed for sequestration.

When fossil reforming is no longer most economic, the CO2 will be recirculated rather than sequestered. Methanol will be made from renewable/nuclear energy utilizing CO2 hydrogenation/electrolysis.
